HathiTrust is a partnership of academic & research institutions, offering a collection of millions of titles digitized from libraries around the world. "As of October 2015, HathiTrust comprises over 13.7 million volumes, over 5.3 million of which are public domain (at least in the US). HathiTrust provides a number of discovery and access services, notably, full-text search across the entire repository" (Wikipedia entry). 

Many items may be read online for free.
