Q. What are the steps to becoming a Career Online High School student?

If you are interested in becoming a Career Online High School student, you need to see if you meet the basic requirements:

  • Be 19 or older
  • Live in San José
  • Have completed at least the 8th grade
  • Have a San José Public Library card in good standing
  • Commit to spending a minimum of 10 hours per week on your coursework
  • Have access to a computer

If you meet the above requirements, please visit www.sjpl.org/cohs and read the Frequently Asked Questions. These are the steps to becoming a COHS student:

  • Complete the self-assessment
  • Respond to a phone screening from San José Public Library staff
  • Complete a prerequisite class within two weeks with a 70% or higher
  • Pass an in-person interview at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library
  • Participate in a group orientation
  • If offered a free scholarship (value $1,200), successfully pass 30-day probation period
  • Continue to complete two or more classes every month
  • If appropriate, submit American transcript for evaluation of transfer credits
  • Maintain regular contact with Library and Career Online High School staff
